ABOUT US

Barbey Electronics Corp was founded in 1916 by George D. Barbey as "The George D. Barbey Company". At that time, the company was a supplier of automotive batteries and ignitions.  George then got involved with the automobile radio and, while doing repairs to radios (and eventually televisions) he got the idea of stocking repair parts that he could use and also resell to other repairmen in the area, thus beginning his distribution business.

In 1947, George built a warehouse, moving the company from his garage.  At this time the company increased the supply of electronic parts to distribute and stopped doing repairs. They became an installer of sound and security systems and made that their primary focus.

Carl Barbey, George’s son, assumed the helm in 1960 when George passed away.  Carl had just gotten home from serving in the military but had been working in the business many years prior.  In 1979 ownership passed from the Barbey family to Gary L. Gammell who transferred the name to Barbey Electronics Corp.  Gary’s background of over 20 years with Allied Electronics and Newark Electronics was in the industrial market therefore; he changed the company's direction from sound and security and focused primarily on the industrial electronics parts market.

In 1988, Barbey Electronics Corp joined the Genie Group, a group of independent electronic distributors across the United States.  This enabled them to combine their purchasing and marketing efforts to compete with the larger national distributors.  Today there are over 80 independent members with over 125 stocking locations.

In 1994, Barbey expanded their business to the Mid-West with the acquisition of fellow Genie member United Radio, Inc
(URI Electronics).

Today, as one of the oldest electronic distributors in the United States, Barbey has become a leading OEM/MRO distributor of industrial electronic components and services, serving the Mid-Atlantic, Mid-West and South Atlantic regions. Barbey also specializes in Value-added services ranging from customized terminal blocks, indicator lights, custom cable assemblies, battery packs and more!

The Genie Group was incorporated in 1984 by a group of independent electronic distributors.  It was their idea to combine sales and resources to gain collective buying power to compete successfully with larger organizations.  What started with six members has grown to 93 members with over 300 branch locations.

The Genie Group aligns itself with premier suppliers and is the largest electronic marketing group in the U.S. with a shared buying power of over $1 billion.  Genie has a centralized distribution center in Franklin, TN which our members can easily access by linking on-line to our computer system.  By utilizing Genie's purchasing power, Barbey has access to top suppliers in the industry and is able to provide the items you require at a competitive price.

Genie is proud to be a member of the Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA) and has been in business for 30 years.
